SPLEED is closely related to
LEED. For
certain materials, the leed spots are caused by highly spin polarised electron beams
diffracted from the surface, even though the incident beam is unpolarised. Alternatively,
a spin polarised primary beam can preferentially diffract into certain LEED spots. This
effect can be used to detect the polarisation of electrons in a manner similar to the Mott
detector (see
SPUPS).
